Description

Enjoy a healthier version of a classic appetizer with this crispy air fryer blooming onion, perfect for gatherings and indulgence.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large sweet onion
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (Panko recommended)
  • Cooking spray
  • Dipping sauce (ranch or spicy mayo)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onion: Peel the outer layer and slice downwards to create petal-like slices, stopping short of the root.
  2. Mix the flour mixture: In a bowl, combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper; whisk until blended.
  3. Submerge the onion in buttermilk to soak up moisture.
  4. Coat the onion: Remove from buttermilk, let excess drip, and coat generously with the flour mixture.
  5. Spray with cooking spray, then coat in breadcrumbs, ensuring each petal is covered.
  6. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Cook for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and crunchy.
  8. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free flour and breadcrumbs.
