Description
Creamed spinach is a rich and creamy side dish that transforms fresh greens into a luxurious treat, perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 pounds fresh spinach (or 1 pound frozen spinach)
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Nutmeg (optional)
Instructions
- Prep the Spinach: If you’re using fresh spinach, wash it thoroughly and chop it into bite-sized pieces. For frozen spinach, thaw it and press out excess moisture with a clean kitchen towel.
- Melt the Butter: Place your large skillet over medium heat and melt the butter, letting the wonderful aroma fill the kitchen.
- Create a Roux: Gradually stir in the flour, cooking for about one minute.
- Add the Cream: Slowly whisk in the heavy cream, stirring continuously until the mixture transforms into a luscious, thick sauce.
- Season It Right: Add garlic powder, salt, pepper, and, if desired, a pinch of nutmeg. Stir until everything blends harmoniously.
- Incorporate the Spinach: Gently fold in the prepared spinach, stirring until the heat returns and the spinach wilts.
- Finish with Cheese: Add the Parmesan cheese, mixing it in until it melts completely into the sauce.
Notes
Creamed spinach can be made ahead of time and reheated. For a lighter version, substitute heavy cream with half-and-half.
